Do I need council approval to build a granny flat on my property?

Yes. In most parts of Queensland, including Brisbane and Logan, you’ll need council approval or at least a code-assessable application, depending on zoning, lot size, and intended use. Brisbane City Council allows self-assessable development in some cases but always check current planning rules.

Yes. As of late 2022, the Queensland Government removed restrictions on renting granny flats, allowing property owners to rent to unrelated parties, subject to council rules.

In Brisbane, a secondary dwelling (granny flat) is typically limited to 80m² gross floor area. Other councils, like Logan, may have different limits. The size also depends on the total lot size and other site constraints

It may increase your rates slightly due to higher property value or added services, but it usually adds significant value to your property, especially when built to a high standard and approved correctly.
